In April 2007, Virginia enacted legislation, specifically Senate Bill 1416, which introduced an innovative solar incentive. This law allows Virginia’s electricity consumers the unique opportunity to opt for electricity sourced entirely from renewable energy through their utility provider. Importantly, if a customer’s utility company does not offer a program that supplies electricity generated 100% from renewable sources, this legislation empowers customers with the right to choose and purchase their green power directly from any licensed retail energy supplier that meets this requirement. This initiative represents a significant step towards promoting renewable energy consumption within the state, giving consumers more control over their environmental impact and supporting the growth of the green power market.
