The City of St. George Energy Services Department (SGESD) offers a net metering program to its customers, and updated program guidelines and fees in September 2015.*
Net metering is available to customers that generate electricity using photovoltaic (PV) systems. The net metering agreements available on the utility’s website only pertain to PV, but wind and other renewable technologies may be eligible for net metering. If a customer wishes to participate in net metering with a wind system or other renewable technology, they should contact the utility. The utility may develop additional net metering agreements as needed. Similarly, the net metering agreements currently available on the utility’s website only address systems up to 250 kW. Customers interested in connecting a larger system should contact the utility.
The utility will provide a single, bidirectional meter, paid for by the customer-generator. Credit for net excess generation carries over monthly until the end of the calendar year, at which point the customer will be compensated for the credits at the Renewable Power Rate Available to SGESD (4.019 cents/kWh as of 2/22/2023.)
The City of St. George has also developed interconnection rules for net-metered systems. Inverter-based, single phase systems up to 10 kW in capacity can qualify for Level 1 interconnection, which features a streamlined review process. Systems greater than 10 kW and up to 250 kW, or smaller systems with a battery, can qualify for Level 2 interconnection.
* Utah enacted legislation in 2002 requiring all investor-owned electric utilities and cooperative utilities to offer net metering to their customers. However, the law does not apply to municipal utilities. The City of St. George offers net metering voluntarily. Net metering is available to electric customers of SGESD; residents of St. George that receive power from another utility are not eligible.
