Summary

The Washington State Department of Commerce established the Evergreen Sustainable Development Standard (ESDS), a green building protocol that all affordable housing projects must adhere to when seeking funding from the Washington State Housing Trust Fund (HTF) as of July 2008. This standard utilizes a point-based system, rewarding various sustainable building practices, including:

  • Effective site location and neighborhood planning;
  • Implementation of water conservation methods;
  • Emphasis on energy efficiency and integration of renewable energy technologies;
  • Use of eco-friendly construction techniques, materials, and measures to enhance indoor air quality.

In 2018, the ESDS was revised to its 4.0 version. The detailed latest standards are available here.
